You have to admire the ambition that has been driving KIA Motors in the recent years. If you are unaware, just take a look at their most recent models; you will appreciate that they are designed by an ambitious team. One of the most talked about models is the 2014 KIA Optima. This model is already causing ripples in the market, unbalancing the lead of most of the European and Japanese heavyweights in its segment.
The 2014 KIA Optima comes with 1.7-liter 136PS diesel engine matted with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Most sedans come with 2.0-liter engines but this does not mean the Optima lags behind. Quite contrary, the U2 1.7-liter engine exudes a performance that can match any of the European or Japanese models with a 2.0-liter engine.
When the 1.7-liter engine is combined with automatic transmission, the Optima can go from 0 – 60 mph in 11.5 second. The Optima achieves even a faster acceleration when equipped with a manual transmission, performing the same feat in just over ten seconds.
The 2014 Optima is stunning, bringing into reality the desire of KIA to drive in roads in the urban motoring industry. Much of the renovation has been carried out on the bumpers, rear lights, wheels, headlights and fog lamps. These revisions give the 2014 KIA an outward appeal that will rival most of its competition.
The designers of the Optima sought to introduce some luxury and comfort to the sedan. They seem to have succeeded in this endeavor as the cabin is luxurious enough to dull some premium brands. The dashboard is better organized with the controls easily accessible. The steering has been revised to give better handling and an upgrade on the seats, center console, door armrest and the gear selector take the Optima’s interior to another level.
No other car in this segment beats the 2014 Optima in terms of fuel efficiency. Both automatic and manual models are built with fuel efficiency in mind. The automatics have three driving modes: the Active ECO mode, the Normal mode and the Sport mode. The Active ECO mode is specially engineered towards maximum fuel efficiency while the Sport mode is geared towards enhanced engine performance. The automatic Optima has a combined EPA of 47.1 mpg while the EPA of the manual model, which has better fuel efficiency, is pegged at 57.6 mpg. The Optima is not just fuel efficient but also emits low CO2, a concern for buyers that are environmental conscious. CO2 emissions of the automatic is at 158g/Km while for the manual car is at 128g/Km.
Often, economy sedans have been associated with minimal features. However, this is not the case with the 2014 Optima. Some features are no longer a luxury even in sedans. KIA Motors took time to include an array of features into the 2014 Optima. The Optima comes with a revised audio system that seamlessly integrates modern tech gadgets such as the iPod. The navigation system is also improved and now includes a seven-inch screen.
The sedan segment has in the past been overrun by a cartel of European and Japanese models but it seems the 2014 KIA Optima is here to stop that monotony. Production of the Optima is a bold move by KIA Motors aimed at shaking the status quo that has existed in the economy sedan car segment. The 2014 Optima matches and even exceeds it European and Japanese rivals in every aspect. There is no doubt that the Optima will propel KIA Motors at the helm of the sedans segment.
