The 2014 Kia Sorento is number nine on the US News list of Affordable Midsize SUVs. The ranking is based on the vehicle’s overall performance, reliability and safety. The Sorento offers excellent value overall. You get 20/26 city/highway mpg from the Sorento, which is average for midsize SUVs. It’s powered by a four-cylinder engine with the option to upgrade to a V6. The six-speed automatic transmission earns points for shifting smoothly and adding to the vehicle’s comfortable ride. The Sorento is also responsive when it comes to accelerating and handles somewhat athletically.

When you take a seat in the Kia Sorento, the first thing you may notice is how comfortable the front seats are. Slip into the second row and the thought carries with you. While some midsize SUVs offer more space in the rear than the Sorento, this SUV certainly isn’t lacking in cargo room. The straightforward climate controls ensure a comfortable interior while the easy-to-use infotainment system keeps the music coming. Standard interior features include cloth seats, USB and auxiliary jacks, satellite radio, and Bluetooth. Plenty of add-ons are also available, including leather seating, heated and cooled seats, driver seat memory, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, and much more.

2014 Volkswagen Touareg

Ranking number eight on the US News list of Luxury Midsize SUVs is the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg. While it’s certainly a luxury vehicle, the cost is quite high for a mainstream brand. The Volkswagen Touareg offers a six-cylinder engine with plenty of power. The optional diesel V6 offers even more torque and better fuel efficiency than the standard gas engine. The six-cylinder achieves 17/23 city/highway mpg while the diesel upgrade boasts 20/29 city/highway mpg. The steering is responsive and passengers experience less body lean through turns, making it a more comfortable ride than that offered by other SUVs.

The upscale cabin appearance is the first thing you notice when you step inside. Every seat in this five-passenger SUV is comfortable enough for a full day’s drive. The cargo space is average but roomy enough for most families. The climate controls are easy to use, but the optional navigation system complicates the process of making stereo adjustments. Standard features include dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth and eight-speaker stereo. In addition to the navigation system, other notable add-ons include a backup camera and ten-speaker stereo system.

How They Compare

If the vehicles had a closer price point, the decision between the 2014 Kia Sorento and the Volkswagen Touareg would be more difficult to make. However, with only a few extras going for it and a much higher base price, the Touareg simply isn’t a practical choice for many families that need a more affordable SUV. After all, even with all the extras that make the Sorento nearly as luxurious as the Touareg, the price is still lower than the Touareg’s bare bones package.
