Which Kia Is Right for Me?

Kia Soul EVWith so many different models to choose from, it can be difficult, especially for first time buyers, to find the Kia that is perfectly right for their needs and life. While coming to the dealership and sitting in and test driving the different vehicles is the best way to figure out which vehicle is for you, getting an idea of each model beforehand can help you narrow down your choices. Here are Kia’s models and some basic information about each to help you decide which you want to test drive.

Kia Optima

Starting at $21,690, the Kia Optima is definitely one of the more popular choices among buyers. It has the right features, at the right price point to make it a common pick. With 27 combined miles per gallon, it can help a buyer save money on gas. Available in a range of colors, with a range of different trim packages, a very basic model still looks expensive, while a tricked-out Optima can rival vehicles from luxury manufacturers.

Kia Cadenza

Starting out at $34,900, this sedan has a combined miles per gallon of 22. This car’s draw is power and style. Available in a range of deep luxurious colors and with premium interior materials, the Cadenza is a great pick for anyone look for a mid-priced luxury sedan.

Kia K900

The $54,500 K900 is Kia’s answer to the luxury sedan. Solidly built to be responsive and safe to drive, the K900 is a great option for anyone looking for a vehicle that is as great for running errands as it is for picking up your boss for a client dinner.

Kia Sorento

What’s great about the Kia Sorento is not just its price, but its style and excellent MPG. Buyers with family or friends that often find themselves driving around like the Sorento because it has plenty of leg room and storage space, so even long road trips are comfortable. It’s somewhere in between a minivan and a crossover, so it can get you where you need to go, without everyone feeling crammed into a small space. This vehicle is perfect for anyone who needs more space than a sedan can offer.

Kia Sedona

Though the Sedona is the only minivan in Kia’s lineup, it’s definitely one of the best minivans on the road today. Affordable, with plenty of storage space and seating for the whole family and all of their book bags or luggage, the Sedona goes where you need it to go and does what you need it to do.

Kia Soul

One of Kia’s most unique offerings, this crossover starts at just $15,190. While it is not the least expensive vehicle on the list, it does have 26 combined mpg, and the shape and colors available for this vehicle make it one of a kind. Anyone looking for something truly unique will love the Kia Soul.

Kia Sportage

The Sportage, starting at just $21,900, is popular amongst buyers who want a rugged, inexpensive, but still luxurious vehicle that is as reliable as it is sporty. The trim options make it possible to transform this vehicle into the ultimate camping machine or into a useful and elegant commuting car.

Kia Rio

Kia is one of the only car manufacturers to have both a complete line of sedans and a complete line of compacts. The Rio is available in both the four and five door models, and because it is starting at just $13,990 and has 31 combined mpg, this is a popular pick for first-time buyers or just someone that wants an inexpensive, reliable, stylish car that gest them where they need to go. Most drivers report both the four and five door models as being responsive, zippy cars, with great maneuverability. Smaller than the sedans, this Rio might not be ideal for buyers who often need to drive around more than three other people.

Kia Forte

The Kia Forte rivals the Rio for gas mileage, but is a little bit bigger and has a few more features. There are two other versions of the Forte available, including the Forte5, and the Forte Koup, both of which have even more features than just the base model. These cars are designed to turn on a dime, follow instruction, and have lots of safety features that make them perfect for young and old drivers alike.

Kia Optima Hybrid

While most manufacturers are now offering a hybrid model, none are offering a hybrid starting at just $26,000. The hybrid version of the Optima gets up to 38 combined mpg and comes with all the same features as the non-hybrid Optima. It’s an ideal pick for anyone looking to save money on gas and lessen their impact on the environment.

Kia Soul EV

Kia is one of the only manufacturers to have a commercially available, completely electricity powered vehicle. The Soul EV looks and acts just like a Soul, but because it is powered just by electricity, not by gas, it is the most environmentally friendly choice.

Which One Is Right for Me?

It’s easy to get caught up in the design and flash of buying a new car. Having too many choices can leave you stymied. In order to narrow down your choices, think about what you are going to use this vehicle for. Are you going to use it just to commute to and from work? To errands around town? To road trip during the summer? To drive around your friends and family? The more space you need, the larger the vehicle should be, like a SUV or crossover.

However, if you just want something small and manageable, at a great price, a sedan or compact is likely going to be a better choice.

2015 Kia Optima & 2014 Kia Optima Model Comparison

2015 Kia Optima Burlington

The 2014 Kia Optima is billed as “not your average sedan” and with a very competitive MPG profile, a 274-horsepower direct injection engine, and roomy, luxurious interior, it’s obvious that the Kia Optima is indeed not your average sedan. Since the Kia Optima’s introduction about a decade ago, the Kia Optima has dominated the competition in terms of safety features, aesthetics, accessories and performance.

2014 Kia Optima vs. 2015 Kia Optima

The 2014 Kia Optima improved the front-end and tail and added LED fog lamps and LED lighting to its trim. Nappa leather interior was added to the EX-L 2014 Kia Optima and, subsequently, the 2015 Kia Optima adds an aesthetically-pleasing dark-toned cloth interior design.

Both the 2014 and 2015 versions of the Kia Optima offer five trim levels from the affordable LX and EX to the more high-end SX Turbo and Limited Kia Optima sedans. Many of the changes that the Kia Optima underwent vis-a-vis the 2014 Kia Optima and 2015 Kia Optima, though, involve technology upgrades. For instance, the 2014 Kia Optima featured a 4.3 inch screen as well as available an eight-inch navigation screen. The 2015 Kia Optima goes one step further by offering a UVO infotainment system that combines four innovative services.

The four services offered on the UVO infotainment system (e.g., Driving Score) are available on the higher-end 2015 Kia Optima trim levels whereas 911 Connect, Parking Minder and other apps will continue to be available on the standard LX trim. Drivers and passengers alike taking the 2015 Kia Optima for a test-drive will also notice that the windshield is acoustic-laminated even in the entry-level LX versions of the 2015 Kia Optima.

2014 Kia Optima Interior NJ

The cruise control switch on the 2015 Kia Optima is also located in a more convenient spot, which is a nod from Kia’s engineers that purchasers of the 2014 Kia Optima had their voices heard. The 2015 Kia Optima also offers a few new paint options, including platinum graphite. The 2015 Kia Optima, overall, mainly makes a series of technological and cosmetic touchups to the 2014 Kia Optima. New apps, on-board screens, and paint options are a few of the upgrades.

Performance and Structural Differences in 2015 Kia Optima

There are, however, some structural and performance differences between the five trim levels of the 2014 Kia Optima and 2015 Kia Optima. Turbochargers and hybrids round out the five trim levels of the 2015 Kia Optima, yet for all of this power all five trim levels feature 4-cylinder engines.

A 2.4 liter engine and 192 horsepower was standard on the LX, EX and SX 2014 Kia Optima sedans. On the 2015 Kia Optima sedans, however, the horsepower is upped to at least 200 horsepower on all but the LX trim 2015 Kia Optima. The 2015 SX Kia Optima manages to eke out 274 horsepower from a 4-cylinder, 2.4 liter engine. Shift points as well as steering weightings can be altered in real time with the 2015 Kia Optima SX’s direct select system.

Kia Optima NJ

A windshield with noise-isolation technology has been added to all five trims of the 2015 Kia Optima to address cabin noise concerns over the 2014 Kia Optima. The 2015 Kia Optima is much quieter. To sweeten the deal even more, the 2015 Kia Optima features available heated (and cooled) front seats. Additional, Sirius radio and an eight-speaker surround sound system really enhance the interior features of the 2015 Kia Optima.

The government gave the 2015 Kia Optima a five-star rating in all but one test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also gave the 2015 Kia Optima glowing safety reviews.

The Kia Optima comes standard with a four-cylinder 192 horsepower engine capable of achieving 23/34 city/highway mpg. The optional turbocharged engine offers 274 horsepower and 20/31 city/highway mpg. The Optima’s athletic get up and go makes it very fun to drive, and the powerful brakes give the driver full control of the vehicle.

The driver and passenger seats are well-designed for tall riders, though the sloping roof is a little too close for comfort in the back seat for tall passengers. Both engines have enough power for daily driving needs, though driving the Forte doesn’t feel particularly athletic.

2014 Kia Optima & Volkswagen Passat Vehicle Comparison

There are certainly plenty of options available these days for anybody in the market for a new vehicle. In fact, there are more options than ever before, including sports utility vehicles, compact SUVs, hatchbacks, wagons, minivans, compacts, etc. There are so many modern vehicle options that it can be easy to overlook the classic, four door sedan. However, there are some popular, acclaimed sedans on the market for the 2014 model year, including the Kia Optima and the Volkswagen Passat.

These two similarly-priced vehicles vie for a similar segment of the market. For anybody trying to decide which of these sedans is worth the investment, this is a closer examination of the 2014 Kia Optima and the 2014 Volkswagen Passat, as well as a comparison between the two.

The 2014 VW Passat

2014 VW Passat

2014 VW Passat

Volkswagen has put some effort into making the Passat more appropriate for the American market: the new Passat is upgraded in size from previous model years, and the engine power has also evolved marginally.

However, as far as power is concerned the base model 2014 Passat still lags behind the competition with a mere 170 horses in the five-cylinder engine. This VW works fine for mild, slower driving, but when acceleration and power is needed, there is definitely something missing from the base-level Passat. Car buyers will have to shell out more if they want more power in their Passat.

For the substantial family car market the 2014 Passat does offer some plusses, including a fairly spacious backseat and no small amount of storage space in the trunk, as well as decent safety features. On the other hand, contemporary families often expect more in their vehicles, especially for longer trips: where is the satellite radio, the modern infotainment system, or even a USB port to charge or plug in an ancillary device? Not in the standard 2014 Passat. Just like a satisfactorily powerful engine, consumers have to pay extra if they want any of those features.

2014 VW Passat Interior

2014 VW Passat Interior

The exterior and interior design of the new Passat is unlike what Volkswagen fans may be used to. The understated does resemble other popular sedans from Honda and Toyota. Whether this is a good or bad thing depends on who you ask.

Kia Optima NJ

2014 Kia Optima

Over the past few years, the Optima has become a major player in the sedan world, and this is mostly thanks to Kia’s continuing optimization of the Optima’s design and features. The 2014 Optima is a continuation of this successful trend, with a subtle update of the sedan’s exterior that does well by the current generation of Optima design while adding a sharp, distinct element to the front-end and the exterior overall.

2014 Kia Optima Interior

Drivers will be happy to find that the dash controls are simplified and intuitive while still providing plenty of options. The 4.3 inch infotainment and navigational display is also welcome. The seats have been improved to provide even more comfort and spaciousness in both the front and the back.

Like the Passat, the Optima has great safety features and ratings. However, the Kia also packs plenty of power even in the base model: a horsepower of 200 in the direct-injection engine with affordable upgrades available for those who wish for even more power.

The Verdict

Kia Optima NJ Black and White

Kia Optima

While Volkswagen is working on adapting the Passat for the contemporary sedan marketplace, Kia is already there with the Optima, and the 2014 Optima is not only the best Kia Optima yet, it is among the best choices for sedan buyers on the market.

    • a change of warm clothes.
    • an ice scraper.
  2. Check your fluids. You need to keep an eye on your fluid levels throughout the winter. Check the following at least every couple of weeks:
    • Oil
    • Brake fluid
    • Transmission fluid
    • Antifreeze
  3. Check your wiper blades and fluid level. You need to see when you are out driving in the cold air. Make sure your windshield wiper blades are in good shape. Check that the defroster and heater are working properly. Check your windshield fluid levels at least once a week or after any major snow storm. All of these steps will make sure you can see out the window when that snow storm arrives.
  4. Think about snow tires. If you live in an area that is a bit hilly, snow tires can make a difference. They offer extra traction, especially in the deepest months of the year. You put them on at the beginning of winter and take them off at the end. You store them and repeat the cycle next winter.
