2014 Kia Forte Trims – Which is for you?

The Kia Forte made its North American debut in model year 2009, introducing the concept of a truly compact car unlimited by design layouts; it could be bought as a two-door coupé, a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback. All are front engine, front-wheel drive cars.

2014 Kia Forte Trims

The first generation was sold until 2013, perfectly suiting its target market (which Kia executives had described as a younger crowd, more interested in racier, sleeker designs). The second generation, available for the 2014 model year, was entirely redesigned, inside and out (although still offering the same three body styles). A longer and wider, lower stance improved both aesthetics and performance while at the same time, both new engines – a 1.8-liter four-cylinder producing 148 horsepower, and a two-liter upping the ponies to 173 hp – actually increased fuel efficiency. This was a combination that couldn’t fail when fuel prices seemed to be following an endlessly upward curve.

Across the Range

All 2014 Kia Fortes boast front-end LED positioning lights (LEDs are also available for the rear as an option), comprehensive steering wheel-mounted controls, an updated airbag system along with active head restraints.

Trim Levels

Forte is available in two basic trim levels; LX and EX.

2014 Kia Forte LX & Kia Forte EX NJ

2014 Kia Forte LX & Kia Forte EX

Kia Forte LX:

  • 1.8-liter gas engine, developing 148 horsepower and delivering 25 MPG city, 37 highway
  • Projector Beam Headlights
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity

Kia Forte EX:

  • 2.0-liter, 173 horsepower engine that still sips at the gas, giving 24 city, 36 highway
  • LED Positioning Lights
  • Microsoft’s UVO eServices Infotainment System
  • Rear Camera Display

Two very special editions are also available.

Kia Forte5 SX

2014 Kia Forte5 NJ

2014 Kia Forte5

Also heavily redesigned for 2014, the Forte5 is Kia’s first real try at attracting the hot-hatch audience. Performance figures for the entry-level model are reported as:

  • 7.5 seconds to 60 mph
  • 15.7 seconds quarter-mile (terminal 89 mph)

Wheelbase under the new model is two inches longer than hitherto, but the use of more high-strength steel reduces the need for structural metal, so vehicular mass is largely unaffected.

The Forte5’s highest performance version is the SX, which runs a 1.6-liter turbo-charged four-cylinder engine that’s entirely new to Kia’s North American inventory. This volunteers some pretty substantial enhancements:

  • 201 horsepower (the 2013 naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter only developed 173)
  • 195 lb-ft of torque (the previous incarnation maxed out at 168)

Sold with a standard six-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic transmission, the front-strut/rear-torsion-beam suspension has also been uprated, hydraulic steering has been replaced by an electrical installation, and the driver has a choice of ‘Normal,’ ‘Comfort,’ and ‘Sport’ boost settings on the turbo.

Kia Forte Koup

2014 Kia Forte Koup NJ

2014 Kia Forte Koup

Koup is Kia-speak for ‘coupe,’ a sporty complement to the range’s more staid sedan and five-door hatches.

Two-door coupes are becoming increasingly rare in the compact car segment, but Kia isn’t relying on that to stand out. Making far more of the head and taillights than did the pre-revamp design and eschewing the oddly contorted grille gracing its stable-mate sedan, the Kia Forte Koup is a very attractive car.

Two engines are available (both four-cylinder):

  • A naturally-aspirated, direct-injection two-liter is standard, developing 173 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque
  • The Koup SX uses the direct-injected 1.6-liter Gamma-family turbo, harnessing 201 horses and serving up 195 lb-ft of torque

The turbocharged edition also has an uprated braking set-up.

The basic LX comes with beige or great cloth seats, six-way adjustable driver’s seat, and a rear seat with adjustable headrests and a 60/40 split. The EX offers an upgrade with standard black leather seats, a driver’s seat with ten-way power adjustment, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and indoor door handles in satin chrome. The SX keeps the upgrades of the EX and adds carbon fiber film accents, black cloth headliner, and alloy pedals.

The Limited brings three seating material options: white, gray, and black Nappa leather. This trim level includes four-way adjustable front passenger seat, heated front and rear seats, and bright chrome inside door handles. Some of these upgrades are optional on the EX and SX trim packages.

A spacious cabin is common to all trim packages. Leg room, both front and back, offer everyone a comfortable ride. The head room is generous, though the rear seat is a bit lower than the front due to the exterior roof slope. If you add an optional moon roof, the head room is a bit shorter.

2014 Kia Sorento Interior Review

The 2014 Kia Sorento is a 5-passenger SUV that’s available in four trim levels: LX, EX, SX and SX-L. While every trim has many standard and optional features, the specific interior features you’ll find will vary based on which trim you choose.

The Flexibility Drivers Want

One of the biggest selling points of the Kia Sorento in NJ, is that so many of the features are offered as options. This may initially lead some folks to think that Kia’s trying to nickel and dime them for every feature they’re looking for, but the opposite is actually true. When you have so many options to add on exactly what you want, without paying to upgrade to a trim that includes features you don’t need, you have a lot more control over the price of your vehicle. Drivers are able to select exactly the bells and whistles they want without paying for those they don’t want.

Generous Standard Features

Kia was quite generous with the standard features on the base LX trim, which includes air conditioning, a full range of power accessories, a 40/20/40 folding back seat, Bluetooth connectivity, tilting and telescoping steering wheel, and a 6-speaker stereo with CD player, USB jack, and satellite radio.

2014 Kia Sorento Trunk NJ

2014 Kia Sorento Trunk

The quality of the materials in the cabin is quite impressive, though some may be surprised to see so much hard plastic. The good news is that this plastic is incredibly easy to clean, which can keep this vehicle looking sharp for years to come. There is a new, larger touchscreen in the 2014 Kia Sorento, and said touchscreen utilizes a more intuitive menu structure, upgraded graphics, and a secondary control knob. Together, these features come together to create one of the more user-friendly tech interfaces not just in its class, but on the market altogether.

UVO Voice Activation System

2014 Kia Sorento

2014 Kia Sorento UVO

Many are familiar with Ford’s Sync system, and the Kia’s answer was the UVO voice activation system. It is incredibly adept at understanding voice commands for a variety of systems, including cell phones and the stereo. This system does indeed provide users with a truly hands-free experience, which is not just convenient – it also increases safety for drivers.

Spaciousness and Ride Quality

Kia Sorento

2014 Kia Sorento Interior

The driver and front passenger can enjoy truly commanding views of the road and ahead, and the seats manage to perfectly balance comfort and support. Adult passengers have plenty of head and legroom in the second row, though the third row is best for children – not only because of less legroom, but because it can be somewhat difficult to access. There is a ton of cargo space – a full 36.9 cubic feet when the middle row of seats is upright. When you fold them down, the cargo space is expanded to a truly impressive 72.5 cubic feet.

Materials and Gauges

The specific materials in your 2014 Kia Sorento will vary based on which trim you buy. The base line is upholstered in quality cloth, while the EX and above get quality leather upholstery. Upper level trims also add convenience and comfort features like two-zone auto climate control, heated seats for the front, power adjustable eight-way driver’s seat (including power lumbar), LCD gauges, automatically dimming rear mirror, rear camera, ambient interior lighting, and sunshades for the back seats.

Image

High End and Optional Features

The EX and SX have tons of standard interior features, most of which can be added to lower trims as optional features. For example: panoramic sunroof, driver seat memory settings, upgraded eight-inch touchscreen display, ten-speaker Infinity surround-sound stereo, blind-spot monitoring system, navigation system, and ventilated front seats.
